Nni Akasi

Nni Akasi, also known as pounded cocoyam, is a traditional staple food cherished among the Ika people and other ethnic groups in southeastern Nigeria. Made from cocoyam tubers, Nni Akasi has a smooth, slightly stretchy texture.

To prepare Nni Akasi, fresh cocoyam tubers are peeled, boiled until soft, and then pounded using a mortar and pestle until smooth and lump-free. The pounding process helps achieve its characteristic sticky, cohesive texture, though some people may use a food processor for convenience. Once the pounded cocoyam reaches the desired consistency, it is molded into small portions, often served hot alongside soups.

Nni Akasi is not only enjoyed for its taste but also valued for its nutritional benefits. Cocoyam is rich in dietary fiber, potassium, and vitamins, making it a wholesome addition to any meal.
